Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Therapy benefits anyone experiencing stress, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, or major life changes. If daily challenges feel overwhelming or you're seeking personal growth, therapy can provide valuable support and coping strategies.
  • What happens during the first therapy session?

The initial session focuses on understanding your concerns and goals. We'll discuss your background, current challenges, and what you hope to achieve through therapy while establishing a comfortable, supportive environment.
  • How long does therapy typically take?

Therapy duration varies based on individual needs and goals. Some people see improvement in a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly assess progress and adjust treatment accordingly.
  • Is telehealth therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes, research shows telehealth therapy is equally effective as in-person sessions. Many clients appreciate the convenience and comfort of attending sessions from home while receiving the same quality care.
  • What types of therapy approaches do you use?

We utilize evidence-based approaches tailored to each client's needs, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and trauma-informed care to address various mental health concerns and relationship issues.
  • Can therapy help improve my relationships?

Absolutely. Therapy helps improve communication skills, resolve conflicts, and strengthen emotional connections. Whether individual, couples, or family therapy, we focus on building healthier relationship patterns and deeper understanding.
  • Do you provide therapy for children and teens?

Yes, we specialize in therapy for children and adolescents facing anxiety, depression, trauma, and behavioral challenges. We use age-appropriate techniques and also offer group therapy sessions for additional peer support.
  • What should I expect from couples therapy?

Couples therapy focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and rebuilding connection. Both partners learn new skills for expressing needs, managing disagreements, and strengthening their relationship bond through guided sessions.
  • How do you maintain client confidentiality?

All therapy sessions are completely confidential and protected by law. Information shared in therapy stays private unless there's an imminent safety risk, ensuring you feel secure discussing personal matters.
  • What areas do you serve for therapy?

We provide therapy services to clients in Jackson, Sutter Creek, Ione, and surrounding areas in Amador County, California. Both in-person and telehealth options are available to accommodate different preferences.
  • I’ve never gone to therapy before, isn’t it for people who are too weak to handle their problems themselves?

This is a common misconception about therapy, and one that we intend to change. It takes a stronger person to look at their feelings and process difficult aspects of life; you should be so proud of taking this step. It can be uncomfortable at first, but with time you will see how processing feelings and learning how to get your needs met will lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.

  • What’s the difference between talking with friends/family and a therapist?

Research shows that just “getting things off your chest” is not therapeutic; it causes an increase in negative symptoms; your body is re-experiencing the memory but is not being guided on how to process and release the difficult feelings.. A therapist is highly trained in using techniques that allow you to express and let go of the thoughts/feelings associated with some of life’s greatest stressors.

  • Do I have to take medication while I’m in therapy?

As Licensed and Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, we are not able to prescribe medications. Our intake paperwork will ask if you are on any medications so that we can have a clear understanding of how medication is impacting your mental health. There are some cases where we may recommend a client speak with their doctor about medications, but we are objective and unbiased on medications as a whole.

  • Will you share my information with anyone?

The short answer is no! Confidentiality is an extremely important aspect of therapy; you should feel comfortable sharing about your life knowing that this information is privileged and will not leave this space. The only time confidentiality will be broken is when there is an imminent safety risk.

  • Does Telehealth work as well as in-person?

Absolutely yes! Covid has created a shift in the mental health field and most common practices. We have seen that video or phone sessions are just as successful and helpful in reaching treatment goals as in-person. It can feel strange at first, but our clients report feeling comfortable after the first session!
